  • The Other 22 Hours (podcast)
    December 6, 2023

I enjoyed doing The Other 22 Hours podcast immensely. What a wonderful thing to be able to talk about some of the less frequently discussed aspects of the creative life – the other 22 hours besides the 2 you spend on stage. My thanks to Michaela Anne and Aaron Shafer-Haiss for inviting me. You…

  • Gretchen Peters Hangs Up Her Touring Shoes In Style at London’s Cadogan Hall (live review)
    June 1, 2023

“From the opening song, the moving murder ballad “Blackbirds” (the body count at Gretchen’s shows is generally pretty high!) to the closer (an impromptu, solo acoustic rendition of “Love That Makes a Cup of Tea“ which I have on good authority was not included in any of the other dates on this…

  • Gretchen Peters, Cadogan Hall review – writer and performer of exquisite gems (live review)
    May 27, 2023

“Neither singer nor audience wanted the evening to end, and Peters delivered an utterly enthralling show. She was backed by a trio of fine musicians, including her pianist husband Barry Walsh, who stood up from the keyboard to add accordion flourishes to a couple of numbers, including “The Mat…

  • Gretchen Peters – Town Hall, Birmingham. Saturday 20th May 2023 (live review)
    May 22, 2023

“An obvious leaning towards some of the newer material represents the prime evolution of Gretchen Peters’ songwriting. A skill that fermented like the finest old world wine. Of course there was space for some absolute live standards. Has she ever left a stage without singing ‘On a…

  • Gretchen Peters & Kim Richey at Sage Gateshead (live review)
    May 7, 2023

“What followed was spellbinding, The Matador was haunting; All You Got Is a Hammer was punchier than usual with Barry giving us some unexpectedly Jazzy flourishes on the piano. Although I gave it a favourable review in 2015; I didn’t remember Pretty Things which found Gretchen being joined by…

Burnt Toast & Offerings

Gretchen Peters - Burnt Toast & Offerings

You have to watch the quiet ones. Sometimes the loudest truths are served with a whisper. Gretchen Peters, who has written some of country’s most intelligent songs of life’s complications, offers a hushed benediction for a woman emerging from the chilled-over remains of what is truly not enough to flower into full potential.

Gretchen Peters - Gretchen Peters

If Peters’ ’96 debut, The Secret of Life, had the answers, her edgier follow-up poses the questions, mostly about how to navigate rough emotional terrain. Full of surprises – “Eddie’s First Wife” has a randy lesbian at its center – Peters brings the pop sensibility of Sheryl Crow to meditations on Amelia Earhart and Picasso’s cat. Easy to see why she’s already captured the Brits. B+

Trio

Gretchen Peters - Trio

Artists including Faith Hill, Bonnie Raitt, Martina McBride, Etta James, the Neville Brothers, Bryan Adams, Patty Loveless, Billy Ray Cyrus and Neil Diamond have recorded her smart, introspective songs, but for me, it’s always good to hear the writer perform their works, especially when they possess the interpretative powers that Gretchen has.
